In 48 when Israel was founded, the UN suggested a two state solution. The Jews said yes, the Arabs said no. We got a Jewish state. If you look at the past 56 years of conflict there, every major war has been provoked by Arabs, and every major war has been won by Israel, and throughout most of it, the USSR was supporting Arab countries involved like Egypt for example, and they were supporting them to an even greater extent than the US was for Israel. Israel was just superior in their tactics, tenacity, and technology. If you look at the land before it was inhabited, it was barren. Now its the only democracy in the middle east, publishes more books per capita than any other nation, and has a thriving agriculture market (agriculture? yeah). You wonder why it is in the best interest of the US to protect the only democracy in the middle east? Well name a war between two democracies, democracies just do not fight eachother. Its strategic.

I don't have any problem with the Jewish religion, I have a problem with our country's foreign policy with the country of Israel...
There is a distinction that needs to be made.

we're actually not a democracy, we're a republic.
I still dont see the point on the comparing back from 1947. Stuff has not changed that much, and remember Arab countries were getting money from the USSR.
On the subject two drink brought up. Thats my bad, just misread the previous statement.
And on that last comment, about us being a republic, come on. You know what i meant, countries with fair elections by the population and constitutions are what i mean. They can be parliamentary (like Israel) or republics like us. Thats the point.

I think a lot of people really do forget that we're not. I know it seems nit-picky, but kinda important to realize if you think about it. Its sort of what's dividing the country in a sense, those that believe our country SHOULD be a democracy, and those that think pure democracy doesn't really work and that we should go back to being a pure constiutional republic.Originally posted by esn212:

It was probably off topic with what was being discussed though, I'll admit that I only quickly skimmed the previous posts.

if you think you can compare the amount of $$ the USSR was giving "arab" countries with the amount given to israel from USA, UK and germany thats crazy.
